Experience Birthday Ideas for Kids: Dayla’s Sparkly, Thrifted, Tinsel-Filled 5th Birthday Week
Not the biggest balloons. Not the largest cake. Just a whole lot of sparkle.

It was birthday week in our house, y’all. And this year, I went all in on experience birthday ideas for kids instead of a pile of presents.
My girl Dayla turned FIVE, and we celebrated the only way we know how: with sparkles, sugar, and a little bit of chaos.
Now, I’ll be honest. I might have been more excited about her birthday than she was. (Okay, I definitely was.)
But here’s the thing. We are NOT big on gifts in this house. Toys break. Toys get forgotten. (Have you ever seen Toy Story? Exactly.)
So if you’re looking for experience birthday ideas for kids that make memories instead of clutter, pull up a chair. Here’s how we celebrated Dayla’s birthday week, actually.
WATCH THE VLOG
If you’d rather watch the whole week than read about it, the vlog is right here:
01 / THE CLOSET CLEAN-OUT
We kicked off birthday week by going through her closet.
Dayla picked out all the size 4 clothes she was ready to kiss goodbye. Some went easily. Some needed a moment. (She gets the sentimental thing from me.)
Then we packed it all up and took it to Once Upon A Child, where she got to trade her old clothes in for cash. Her OWN money. To spend however she wanted.
She felt so grown up. And honestly? So did I.
Mama tip: This is one of my favorite experience birthday ideas for kids, and it’s free. Letting kids sort and sell their own outgrown clothes teaches them about letting go, the value of a dollar, and making room for what’s next. All before the cake.
02 / THE SPARKLY PINK DRESS
With her cash in hand, we shopped around the store.
Six dresses later (yes, SIX), she found it. The perfect sparkly pink dress.

She was so happy walking out the door with that dress. She didn’t care one bit that it was used. She didn’t even know the difference.
She just cared that it shined.

And if that isn’t a lesson for the rest of us, I don’t know what is.

03 / HER FIRST SALON DAY
This one has my heart.
My sweet friend Alyssa owns a local salon, Mahalla Wild, and she was kind enough to treat Dayla to a service. So on her birthday eve, Dayla got her very first salon experience!
Now, going in, a haircut was absolutely off the table. Dayla insists she is Rapunzel, and cutting her hair will strip her of her powers. (Who am I to argue with that?)
It took some convincing. Okay, a LOT of convincing. But somewhere between the excitement and the big spinny chair, she came around.
She got a haircut, y’all. Powers fully intact.
And then, because it was her birthday eve and she had earned it: hair tinsel. Sparkly, magical, power-preserving hair tinsel.
And seeing her sit in that big chair with her little apron, getting pampered like the princess she is? She was overjoyed. Beaming. The happiest I have seen that girl in a long time, and I see her happy a LOT.
Thank you, Alyssa. We love you!
04 / CLAIRE’S (AND THE GREAT CANDY PIVOT)
Here’s the thing about a girl who loves the salon chair: she does not want to leave it.
We had SO much fun at Mahalla Wild that we ran out of time for the full mall plan. Dayla did not care one bit. (She would have stayed in that chair all afternoon if I’d let her. Alyssa, you may have a new stylist on your hands.)
Which meant the candy store was off the table.
But a birthday girl on a mission is a birthday girl on a mission. No candy store? Fine. She was going to find candy somewhere.
Enter Claire’s.

She walked out with a candy toilet (yes, a tiny toilet full of candy. I don’t make the rules), a princess tiara, and a lip gloss kit.
Sticky hands, a crown, and a sugar rush. Mission accomplished.

05 / DINNER AT OWEN’S FISH CAMP
To end the day, we headed to the best old Florida restaurant around: Owen’s Fish Camp.
If you’ve never been, it’s also the best family-friendly spot for a big group. Out back there’s a huge porch and backyard with live music, games, putt-putt, boat games, giant building blocks, cornhole, basketball hoops… you name it.
The kids play. The parents actually get to sit down. Everybody wins. (And if you’re making a whole Sarasota day of it, start the morning at one of my favorite coffee shops in Sarasota. You’ll need it.)
And not to mention… the fish and grits are to die for. And don’t even get me started on the oysters.

What I love: The old Florida charm, the live music, and a backyard that keeps kids busy for hours.
Best for: Big groups, birthday dinners, and families who want a real night out without the stress.
WHY EXPERIENCE BIRTHDAY IDEAS FOR KIDS BEAT A PILE OF TOYS
I’m all about making memories and giving hands-on experiences. Experience birthday ideas for kids don’t have to be fancy or expensive, either. Most of this week cost less than one big toy. When we do spend money, I’d rather put it toward things that build their skills or keep them active.
Because the toy will be forgotten by Christmas. But the day she got tinsel in her Rapunzel hair, sat in a big salon chair, and ran around the backyard at Owen’s with all her friends? That one sticks.

At the end of the day, it’s not about the big balloons, the large cake, or the shiniest toy.
Sometimes a thrifted sparkly dress, a tiara from Claire’s, and time on the patio of an old Florida restaurant will do the trick.
And every year I get to celebrate this girl, I’m reminded of how good God has been to us. Every season. Even the hard ones. Especially the hard ones.
She doesn’t need more stuff. She just needs to know she’s celebrated. 🤍
